Create an Enchanting Stumpery

We have a magnificent range of hardy ferns that can be used to create a stumpery. Stumperys are as the name implies; garden features comprised of stumps arranged upside-down or on their sides to show the root structure and logs, driftwood or large pieces of bark and moss and ferns growing in and around them. Add hosta's and hellebore's too, as illustrated by Prince Charles, who has created a truly dreamy stumpery ay Highgrove.

Dsicover Sparkling Wine from Carcassonne

Sample a truly outstanding style of sparkling wine (available in the UK exclusively through Lime Cross Nursery- for now) at our try before you buy wine tasting.
Ever want something different from Champagne, Prosecco or Cava.. well... here is the answer.

Our dear conifer producing friends at Pépinière des Laurains who are located close to the Champagne region of France, are also producers of outstanding sparkling and still wine. Ironically not from Champagne, but from Limoux in the south which is close to the medieval city of Carcassonne.

They make two sparkling wines and one still. The first sparkling in a Blanquette de Limoux, which is made in a very similar way to Champagne; in style it is more fruit driven as well as being refined and complex in the same way as Champagne. Their  Blanquette méthode ancestrale, as the name suggests is produced using an ancient method invented in 1531, the result is a low ABV wine of 8% and higher sugar, this wine is heavenly, an explosion of apple pie, caramel and biscuit with a zippy acidity to balance it out, great for starting the night with or finishing it with a dessert. The third wine is their still Chardonnay, which is full-bodied, elegant and super smooth, a real food wine that will work with chicken and fish dishes.
Price TBC- approx £15.00/ btl.

Win two tickets to RHS Wisley

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is a UK charity established to share the best in gardening. Our work is driven by our simple love of plants and the belief that gardeners make the world a better place.
The RHS was given Wisley in 1903, although at that time only a small part of the 60 acre estate was actually cultivated as a garden, the remainder being wooded farmland. The original garden was the creation of George Fergusson Wilson - businessman, scientist, inventor and keen gardener and a former Treasurer of the Society.

While Wisley was taking shape as an ornamental garden, its educational and scientific roles were never forgotten. A small laboratory was opened and the School of Horticulture founded to instruct young people in the principles of horticulture and prepare them for careers as professional gardeners.

Matthew Pottage (MHort RHS) is a Curator at Wisely and currently manages the teams that care for the outdoor, ornamental areas of the flagship garden.  Matthew has a particular interest in ornamental plants, with a specialist interest in Conifers and he enjoys sitting on the committee for the British Conifer Society, where he assists the RHS in its review of the Award of Garden merit (AGM) for the conifer group. Matthew has created some incredible plantings at Wisley using conifers and other plant groups. Matthew is a big fan of Lime Cross and has purchased many conifers from here to plant at Wisley. One that we are particularly proud of is the Pinus montezumae Sheffield Park.

Featured Conifer- Araucaria araucana AKA Monkey Puzzle

Araucaria araucana AKA monkey puzzle tree/ monkey tail tree/ Chilean pine/ pehuén) is an evergreen tree growing up to a whopping 40 m (130 ft) tall with a 2-m (7-ft) trunk diameter.  Monkey Puzzles are known as the hardiest of all conifers and due to their incredible age are also described as a living fossil.  The tree is native to Chile and Argentina and is officially classified as an endangered species.  It was discovered in about 1780 by a Spanish explorer and brought to England by Archibald Menzies in 1795. Menzies was a plant collector and naval surgeon on Captain George Vancouver's circumnavigation of the globe, travelling in Captain James Cook's old ship, HMS Discovery. He feasted on the seeds of this conifer as dessert while dining with the governor of Chile and later sowed them in a frame on the quarter deck, returning home to England with five healthy plants. One of these monkey puzzles could be seen at Kew until it died in 1892.
The common name alludes to the fact that the task of climbing the tree, with its sharp branches tightly clothed with spiny leaves, would puzzle even a monkey.

Here at Lime Cross Nursery we have been growing Monkey Puzzles from seeds since the 1970s. We have a truly outstanding collection of specimens all aged around 20 years old, priced at £350.00 each. We can ship to any part of the UK- purchase through Ebay or give us a call. N.B- shipping tariff is for a pallet.

Monkey Puzzle Walk at Woodstock in Ireland

We visited Woodstock last August with The British Conifer Society, where we found an utterly awe-inspiring avenue of Monkey Puzzles.

Lime Cross Nursery at -GROW London 2015

We are excited to announce that we are exhibiting at GROW 2015 this year, 19th-21st June. GROW London is the new contemporary gardener’s go-to, set in the glorious surroundings of Hampstead Heath.
Inspired by stylish European gardening shows, GROW London is a new concept in British gardening events: an urban, boutique show, with around 100 carefully selected exhibitors selling an unrivalled mix of plants, furniture and paraphernalia in a stunningly styled marquee.
GROW London is the brainchild of entrepreneur Will Ramsay, founder of the hugely successful Affordable Art Fair, which is now a global brand with fairs in 14 major cities around the world.
We will be show casing our finest range of conifers at that is all. We have selected the best best of our range, the production of which has been fine-tuned over years and years of cultivating. We hope that this will inspire people to consider conifers in whole new light.
We would absolutely love to see our customers there, it's going to be a great day and the Lime Cross stand isn't too far from the Champagne stand! Book tickets here Our friend Matthew Pottage (Head Curator at Wisley) will be helping us out on the stand, so catch up with Matt too.
E mail helen.tate@limecross.co.uk to express an interest in reserving a space on a coach that we are organizing from Lime Cross to Hampstead Heath. Please state your preferred day and number of seats needed.

The National Pinetum at Bedgebury

The National Pinetum at Bedgebury is one of the finest collections of conifers on one site in the world.

The 320 acre Pinetum contains over 12,000 trees and shrubs (including 1,800 different species) from across five continents, many of them rare and endangered.

Did you know that Bedgebury Pinetum displays many varieties of conifer which have been grafted and grown by us here at Lime Cross Nursery.  Look out for the plaque which marks the area of conifers which have been donated by us on your next visit to Bedgebury!

As well as playing an important scientific role in international conservation, the National Pinetum is a beautiful and tranquil place to walk, picnic and enjoy nature away from the stresses of everyday life.

A Pinetum for all seasons

Each season offers different experiences and pleasures:
Winter - a light dusting of snow or a sharp frost transforms the Pinetum into a winter wonderland.
Spring - a kaleidoscope of azaleas, daffodils, rhododendrons and bluebells.
Summer - the many giant specimens cast deep shadows and dappled shade, creating a cool oasis in the warmth of the sun.
Autumn - the fiery leaves and brilliant berries are in sharp contrast to the background of rich green conifers.

The National Pinetum at Bedgebury and the National Arboretum at Westonbirt together form the National Arboreta, managed by the Forestry Commission.
