Moth Breakfast- August 16th at 8:45 am.

Join us for a moth breakfast with expert David Harding of Court Lodge Farm. 

David will be putting his moth trap out on the evening of Friday 15th August, we are then inviting you to come and investigate the contents of the trap on Saturday morning from 9-10am.  David will then identify the moths in the trap, and tell us all about each moth that we find.

Followed by a special breakfast menu in the café for everyone who attends the moth catch.

 Breakfast served until 11:30 am.

Get to the nursery for 8:45 am.

'Wine & Flowers' Grape identification wine tasting with the aid of flowers & plants as references. July Thurs 17th 7-9

 

Understand why some wines smell like plants and flowers. Join us for an evening of wine tasting, where will will taste 6 different wines and explore their sensory profiles, identifying which wines smell like which plant or flower.

Perfect for all wine lovers, the evening will be relaxed and informal whilst being informative.

Suzie's Cooking School- Part Two 'Conquer the Cake'

Following the huge success of Sues Pastry making workshop, we are excited to announce cooking lesson #2 'Conquer the Cake'. Which will take place on Tues 22nd of July 7-9.
Sue, our head chef, has years of experience creating batches of exquisite cakes, some say that she could bake before she could walk. She will share her tips and tricks with the group, enlightening you and aiding you with skills for life.
The workshop which is suitable for all levels will consist of a hands-on demonstration by Sue showing how to make cakes using three different primary methods; creaming, whisking and melting.  At the end of the demonstration guests will be invited to sample the delicious creations along with tea,coffee and wine.

We sponsored The Shire Horse Charge at Lingfield 2014 on Saturday. Our horse Samson looked like a speedy steed, unfortunately he wasn't a winner that day. Never mind though, it's the taking part that counts and the race proved that these horses can really move. There is far more to them that meets the eye. They are extremely intelligent, versatile creatures, that have a fascinating history. To find out more visit  Hurst Green Shires website.

‘Conifer Crusader’ Pinus Montezuma Sheffield Park

There stands at Sheffield Park Gardens in East Sussex a 100 year old specimen of Pinus Montezuma Sheffield Park, with a trunk girth of at least 80 cm and height of 15m.

Back in the 1990s this magnificent conifer was an unexpected source of concern for the National Trust (owners of the gardens), because it was the very last of its kind left on the planet. Like panicked zoo keepers trying to entice reproductively incompetent giant pandas, the horticulture team were struggling to create propagation through seed or grafting. Following several failed attempts they contacted Lime Cross Nursery. Co-founder of the nursery, Jonathan Tate,  who had years of conifer grafting experience, was determined to safeguard this variety’s future. Sure enough through precision, intuition and experimental rootstock selection the problem was cracked.

Today Lime Cross Nursery are now the proud producers and suppliers of this beautiful specimen, which is almost exclusively available through them.

This is written with a heavy heart, as Jonathan Tate sadly passed away just over three months ago, following a 7 year battle with cancer. His natural empathy for plants was unquestionable, and his knowledge was so extensive that potentially we won’t ever be able to appreciate its depth.

We live in a world that sometimes feels ubiquitously contaminated with meaninglessness, such as the loss of young life to disease. These paradoxes of human existence leave us feeling perplexed and hollow. The nursery is an explosion of life; colour, scents, and texture, which is mostly due to Jonathan who spent his life cultivating and creating. This, along with this resuscitation of a species to some extent cushions the blow of our loss here at Lime Cross Nursery.

The trail includes: ‘Lime Cross Nursery’, ‘The Allotments at Stunts Green’, and ‘Cowbeech House- in Cowbeech. REF no.64 in the yellow book. This is is a Celebration and Commemoration for Lime Cross Nursery- a glorious weekend in honour of Jonathan Tate and in aid of the charities that the NGS support. The lakes, Two Acres, the woods, the Pinetum and the growing area will all be open.

We are excited to announce that we are sponsoring a shire horse race at Lingfield Park on the 28th June.
As proud sponsors we will back our own horse and rider who will be adorned with the Lime Cross Nursery colours. Follow the link to book a ticket.
This race proves the versatility of these sometimes overlooked magnificent horses, who can travel at a surprising pace. Despite their size they make wonderful hacking horses, and can even be used for dressage. They are also extremely intelligent and affectionate, real gentle giants.
